The Privacy Revolution
May 20th, 2009

It seems to me that just as the “Sexual Revolution” of the 60s’ was brought about by a shift in values coupled with the invention of the pill, so too the technological impact of the Semantic-Social web along with the growing proliferation of rich-media cellphones, when coupled with the shift in values already demonstrated by today’s teens, will bring about a “Privacy Revolution”.
For me evidence supporting my claim is everywhere around us:
- Look at the steady increase in the numbers of groups dedicated to the publication of erotic, voyeuristic and exhibitionist images on freely accessible, “respectable”, mainstream photo sites.
- At the end of 2007 adult site Zivity.com made history by becoming the first adult site to have received Silicon Valley backing, including an announced $1 million angel round (BTW Zivity is where I met where I met my model Cherie, depicted above.)
- Recent “sexting” scandals and similar events make it pretty clear that, if anything, kids growing up today need to be educated on how to share LESS of themselves online…
My bet? As today’s teens come of age we’ll see a huge cultural shift on these issues:
I think this bodes well for those of us who feel they have nothing to hide.
Personally, I can’t wait…
