Pharaoh's DreamThe scene depicted in this print originates in a strange meeting I had with some cows while on vacation in Turkey. I was sitting on the beach, minding my own business, when all of a sudden out of nowhere, a herd of cows appeared, walked up the beach, and then vanished back into the hedges to my rear. My friend took a photo of the herd which I later used to create the cows in Pharaoh's Dream. The subject matter is Pharaoh's dream of Genesis 41. In the Bible's Old Testament Pharoah dreams about seven fat cows that are devoured by seven lean cows. The dream is interpreted by Joseph, son of Jacob, as both a warning regarding a famine that is about to strike Egypt, and counsel regarding how the famine is to be overcome. Joseph tells Pharaoh that Egypt shall enjoy seven years of prosperity followed by seven years of famine, and counsels him to store the excess grain from the years of bounty for consumption during the years of famine. Many sages have written words of wisdom interpreting the story of Pharaoh's dream. I favor an explanation I once encountered that stresses the fact that the simultaneous existence, however brief, of both septets of cows on the banks of the Nile, is a representation of the fact that we all have within ourselves the ability to overcome the hardships that life puts in our way.
