Death and the Maiden"Death and the Maiden" is one of art's classic subjects touching on timeless subjects: Love and Death, Life and Death, Sex and Death, Rendered in paintings, plays, photos and films, we have recorded evidence of interest in this theme dating back to Classical Greece, and before. This print is my rendition of the subject. Death, mocking and lecherous, is seen pleading obscenely at the Maiden's feet. The coloring of the print leaves little doubt as to the true relationship between the two figures. This print is an homage to the classic medieval Dance-of-Death renditions (also known as Danse-Macabre). Images depicting Death gaily going about his business gained huge popularity in medieval Europe in the wake of the seemingly random horrors of the "Black Death". One of the best known of these art-works is a series of woodcut prints designed by Hans Holbein the Younger and executed by Hans Lützelburger in 1538. Limited Edition720 numbered and signed prints |
