Adam and EveAlthough we were never an observant Jewish household my mother always made a point of ensuring that we would be well versed in Jewish culture, tradition and history. My parents are both Jews of European descent and although neither is a Holocaust survivor, the Holocaust is a defining experience for both of them.
I believe that it is for this reason that they brought me up to be fiercely proud of my Jewish heritage. Despite all of the above, and despite the fact that my mother was careful never to let her encouragement become tiresome, the simple fact is that I never felt close to Judaism as a younger person. Oddly enough it was during my trips to Southeast Asia, India, and China, that I started to feel a connection to my Jewish heritage. I think that it was the distance from Israel, coupled with contrast between the cultures I was touring and the one I had left at home, that lit the first spark. The composition for this image is based on a painting of Adam and Eve by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553 AD). I merely updated the symbolism and the color...
